Королевский монетный двор Канады 1 апреля 2014 года представил новые монеты в честь предстоящей канонизации покойного Папы Иоанна Павла II, который считался одним из самых любимых понтификов.

Блаженный Иоанн Павел II — папа римский, предстоятель Римско-католической церкви с 16 октября 1978 по 2 апреля 2005 года. Беатифицирован 1 мая 2011 года папой римским Бенедиктом XVI.

В 1984 году Папа Иоанн Павел II стал первым Папой, ступившим на канадскую землю. Это было его 24-ое паломничество. Куда бы Папа ни пошел во время 12-дневного пребывания в Канаде, к нему стекались большие толпы. The Royal Canadian Mint has launched two new commemorative coins which honor the upcoming canonization of His Holiness, the Late Pope John Paul II, who was considered one of the most beloved pontiffs in living memory – possibly of all pontiffs in the history of the 2000 year institution. The pure gold and pure silver collector coins were unveiled at ceremonies in Mississauga, Ontario and Saguenay, Quebec as well as the Canadian Embassy in Warsaw, Poland.

In 1984, Pope John Paul II became the first Pope to set foot on Canadian soil, when the papal aircraft landed at the airport in Quebec City. Already an accomplished traveler, the Pope was on his 24th pilgrimage. Wherever he went during his 12-day cross-Canada visit, great crowds flocked to him. Millions of Canadians, including many Indigenous people, turned out to greet the pontiff, pray with him and to celebrate, and many of them were deeply moved by his words and presence. Speaking in English and in French, Pope John Paul II delivered more than 30 major addresses as well as many other statements.

Pope John Paul II would return to Canada twice. In September 1987, he visited Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories. On the third and sadly, the last visit, he met with young people from around the world to celebrate World Youth Day 2002, in Toronto, Ontario. After a papal reign of just about 26 and a half years, the second longest for a pope, John Paul II died on the 2^nd April 2005. John Paul II will be canonized on 27 April 2014, alongside Pope John XXIII, whose reign was between 1958 and 1963.

The reverse image on both coins reproduces a photograph of Pope John Paul II offering Mass during his first visit to Canada in 1984. Through the expert application of varied finishes and skilled engraving, Royal Canadian Mint engravers faithfully captured the power of the moment as the pope raises the Consecrated Host at the elevation. The obverse side features a portrait unique and distinct to the coins of Canada which was designed by Susanna Blunt and in use since 2003.

Это вызвало поток паломников, желающих приложиться к святыне. Чтобы их разместить, 21 апреля 1104 года было начато строительство базилики в романском стиле бургундского извода. Базилика с 1979 года охраняется ЮНЕСКО как памятник Всемирного наследия человечества.

Центром аверса является изображение фрагментов скульптурного убранства базилики Святой Марии Магдалины. Также выгравированы портрет королевы Великобритании Елизаветы II, знак Монетного двора Польши и надписи: «ELIZABETH II», «NIUE ISLAND», «1 DOLLAR», «2014».

На реверсе в две строки выгравирована надпись «ROMANESQUE ART» (Романское искусство — периоду в европейском искусстве, возникшему примерно около 1000 года и продолжавшемуся вплоть до возникновения готического стиля в XIII веке).

Монета отчеканена на Монетном дворе Польши. Дизайнер — Роберт Котович (Robert Kotowicz), украсивший монету вставками из агатов.

Монета 1 доллар из серебра 999-й пробы имеет вес 28,2 г, размер 40 х 40 мм. Тираж — 3 333 шт.

The Treasury of the Island of Niue have launched the first coin in an eight coin series which will focus on varying styles and significant periods of European art which has influenced our world. This issue features Romanesque Art and its focus for highlighting this period is the Benedictine abbey church of St. Marie-Madeleine or as it is sometimes referred to, the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene.

With its complex sculpted capitals and portals, it is one of the most outstanding masterpieces of Burgundian Romanesque art and architecture. Thought to have originated about the year 1050 by the monks of Vézelay who claimed to hold the relics of Mary Magdalene, Vézelay had become an important place of pilgrimage for the Catholic faithful. To accommodate the influx of pilgrims a new abbey church was begun, dedicated on April 21, 1104, but the expense of building so increased the tax burden in the abbey's parish that the peasants rose up and killed the Abbot. The number of pilgrims in later years was such that an extended narthex or, an enclosed porch was built and inaugurated by Pope Innocent II in 1132 to accommodate the faithful. The nave - which had burned down once before with a great loss of life, burned down once again in 1165 after which, it was rebuilt in its present form. The Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Struck by the Mint of Poland on behalf of the Treasury of Niue, the coin is designed by Robert Kotowicz who has accommodated the design to a square or diamond shape. The reverse includes an earlier depiction of the extraordinary carvings above the central portal leading to the nave of the Basilica, the doorway on the coin is decorated with inlays of agate. Below the primary design is the text “ROMANESQUE ART”.

The obverse cleverly shows a later renovated version of these magnificent carvings, also with the agate inlays in the doorway. A miniature portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II is placed just below the doorway and the text “NIUE ISLAND” is seen just above the portrait. The year “2014” is placed to the left corner of the coin and the coin’s denomination of “$1” is on the right side.
